The Sheltering Words of Irini Gonou

 The Sheltering Word

This exhibition is an art quest which explores the healing and protective power of the written word as a specific cultural idiom and takes the form of a dialogue between Greek and North African cultures.

“Using entirely natural materials such as cotton fabric, handmade paper and natural inks, reeds, leaves and linen twine, I offer my own interpretation of amulets, "inscribed" talismanic cloths and “sheltering words” - pinax, -inventing a new magical language in the realm of "written protection". Working in these raw materials, I’m at the same time meditating on their medical-magical-protective properties and their symbolic meanings. In my works the poetic language replaces the magic formulas considering anew the healing properties of art in modern societies”.

The spectator revisits the symbols again in order to reactivate ancient bonds with the eternal subject of supernatural protection drawn from the continuous exchange across this specific geographic and cultural area with its distinctive indigenous scripts.

The exhibition The Sheltering Word of Irini Gonou will take place at the Heyman Center for the Humanities at the Columbia University, New York from September 25th to October 23rd 2013

Irini Gonou was born in Athens. She studied sculpture at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts and at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. στο μουσείο quai de branly

talisman

Arabic is deeply rooted in my repository of memories. I often recall learning the Arabic alphabet when I was a child. It was more than a mere collection of letters. The curviness and the smoothness of the many letters together wove a story in my child’s mind: Raa was a girls’ braid, and lam was my father’s fishing hook.

We, as native Arabic speakers, rarely pay attention to our Arabic alphabet. Because we have spoken and written in Arabic all our lives, we never examine the forms and shapes of those letters.

Today, my own perception of letters has changed tremendously. I don’t see letters as figures anymore. Three years ago, I never thought about the letter nuun. Today, nuun is more than a letter. It is a crescent, a bowl of sadness, a bag of flour, and my lucky talisman!
Each letter has its own story; each articulates a rhythmic music, and each has an identity: some have one dot, while others have two, and one single letter has three dots: Thaa. And each of the three dots is different from the other!

We are used to looking at joined letters, which form words. But we hardly ever see separate letters that have been set individually. When we see faa by itself, it helps our eyes to move freely from the dot to the body forming an image in the mind. One will see a boat. While the other will see a lucky charm! Each letter is unique and has a visual impact on us.

Each has a magical power!

Calligraphy is considered one of the richest resources of many artists from the Arab world. Today, many contemporary artworks differ from one artist to another, but no Arab artist can completely deny the influence of calligraphy. The Arabic alphabet provides me with a variety of potentials to express the artistic identity of Arabs. My work seeks not to present the technicality, but to honor the world of the alphabet. I try to give each letter the value it deserves, and expose it to the contemporary world. My artwork is very intimate. Each piece is part of me. Each is a precious memory of my childhood, and each is a lucky charm.

y.z.kami

Έργα του βρίσκονται σε μεγάλα μουσεία της Νέας Υόρκης, όπως το Metropolitan Museum of Art, το Museum of Modern Art και το Whitney Museum of American Art.

Living Traditions

Contemporary Art from Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan

Devised and organised by Turquoise Mountain, the exhibition brings together contemporary artists from Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan, presenting over 50 artworks that draw on the rich cultural heritage of these three countries.
The participating artists are all inspired by the same shared cultural heritage. But how do artists of today respond to these traditions? Are cultural traditions a burden or a source of inspiration? What do they mean in a modern world of computers, mobile phones, and missiles?
The exhibition, on view at the National Art Gallery, Islamabad from 8 February to 22 March 2009, presents a wide variety of media, including painting, calligraphy, printmaking, sculpture, photography and video animation. There are new responses to calligraphy by Afghan artists Sohaila Khalili and Ali Baba Aurang, contemporary miniature painting by Pakistani artists trained at the National College of Arts in Lahore such as Imran Qureshi, Aisha Khalid and Nusra Latif Qureshi, inventive graphic design by Iranian artists from 5th Colour, as well as new works by Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian and YZ Kami inspired by the beautiful Islamic geometric patterns found in textiles, tile-work and architecture across the Islamic world.
Living Traditions was first shown at the Queen’s Palace in Kabul from 10 October - 20 November 2008. This event creates a new platform for cultural dialogue and exchange between Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan that goes beyond political tensions in the region.
